The walk
The Spirit who points to Jesus
You aren't following Jesus alone.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God.
John 14:16-18 · John 16:13-15 · Romans 8:9-17, 26-27 · Galatians 5:16-25
The scene
Earlier, you read that the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in God's people. Now you're trying to follow him, and this is where that matters.
Jesus told his disciples that he was going away, but he wasn't leaving them alone:
"I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever: the Spirit of truth."John 14:16-17
You may not always feel his presence. But Paul says something much stronger than that:
"But if any man doesn't have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his."Romans 8:9
The Spirit also changes how you live.
"If by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live."Romans 8:13
You're going to struggle with sin, but following Jesus isn't a fight you were told to win by yourself.
"But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won't fulfill the lust of the flesh."Galatians 5:16
The Spirit changes us, producing what Paul calls fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self-control.
And when you don't even know what to pray, he is there too:
"In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don't know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can't be uttered."Romans 8:26
Paul says that we have received "the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!'"Romans 8:15
The God you're learning to pray to is Father. You're following Jesus, his Son. And if you belong to him, his Spirit dwells in you.
Jesus said of the Spirit:
"He will glorify me."John 16:14
The Spirit points you to Jesus.
Sometimes you may feel deeply aware of his presence and sometimes you may not. Don't reduce the Holy Spirit to a feeling. He is with God's people as they learn to follow Jesus.
The point
You aren't following Jesus alone.
