The man
Bread of Life
Thousands followed Jesus after he gave them bread.
I am the bread of life.
John 6:1-71
The scene
Jesus fed five thousand men with five barley loaves and two small fish. Jesus knew they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, so he withdrew from them.
The next day they went looking for him again. Jesus knew why.
"Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled."John 6:26
They brought up the manna their ancestors had eaten in the wilderness. Jesus told them that Moses had not given them the true bread from heaven. His Father does.
"Lord, always give us this bread."John 6:34
But Jesus wasn't offering them another loaf.
"I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty."John 6:35
He was talking about himself.
As Jesus continued, he spoke about eating his flesh and drinking his blood. Many of his disciples said, "This is a hard saying! Who can listen to it?"John 6:60
And many of them left.
Jesus turned to the Twelve.
"You don't also want to go away, do you?"John 6:67
Peter answered:
"Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life."John 6:68
Yesterday the crowd had wanted to make Jesus king. Now many of his disciples were walking away.
Peter stayed.
