The claim
Cross and Rising
Jesus came to give his life.
that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures
Mark 10:45 · 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 · 1 Peter 2:22-24 · 1 Peter 3:18 · John 10:17-18 · Luke 24:39 · Romans 6:9
The scene
Paul gives the message he received and passed on:
"Christ died for our sins."1 Corinthians 15:3
Peter says Jesus "didn't sin," yet:1 Peter 2:22
"he himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness."1 Peter 2:24
Peter puts it another way:
"Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God."1 Peter 3:18
Jesus had said that he came:
"to give his life as a ransom for many."Mark 10:45
Sin had brought death into the world. Jesus had no sin of his own, but he took ours on himself. The righteous suffered for the unrighteous, to bring us to God.
And he gave his life willingly.
"I lay down my life, that I may take it again. No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down by myself."John 10:17-18
He was buried. Ordinarily we'd start speaking about someone in the past tense after that.
On the third day, he was raised from the dead.
Jesus told his disciples:
"See my hands and my feet, that it is truly me. Touch me and see, for a spirit doesn't have flesh and bones, as you see that I have."Luke 24:39
This wasn't a return to ordinary life with another death waiting somewhere ahead.
"Christ, being raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over him!"Romans 6:9
The point
Jesus Christ is alive.
