The walk

Do not walk alone

You were never meant to do this by yourself.

Let's consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another.

Hebrews 10:24-25 · Acts 2:42-47

They say

I can follow Jesus on my own. My faith is between me and God.

Or: Every church I've looked at has something wrong with it.

The scene

The first Christians didn't do this alone.

Acts says they continued in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayer.

They learned together. They ate together. They prayed together. They shared what they had.

Following Jesus had brought them into a community.

We need that too.

Sometimes you'll need encouragement, and sometimes you'll be struggling and somebody needs to know. You might need correcting or forgiving.

And other Christians will need you too.

Hebrews tells Christians not to stop meeting together, but to encourage one another and stir one another towards love and good works.

So find other Christians.

Go to your local churches. Talk to people. If someone invites you to a house group, go. Walking through the door for the first time might feel awkward. Go anyway.

The church you find won't be perfect.

None of them are.

Neither are you.

Following Jesus alongside other people means learning to live with the fact that people will get things wrong, and you will too.

But you don't need perfect people.

You need other Christians, and you will learn from them.

So when you're not sure about something you're taught, go back to the Bible.

The point

Do not walk alone.

Sit with this

Who actually knows how you're doing?
