The scene
Jesus was dead.
His body hung on a cross outside Jerusalem.
A few hours earlier, he had been nailed to it alive.
People passing by mocked him. The chief priests and scribes mocked him too.
Darkness came over the land.
Jesus cried out with a loud voice.
And died.
Before that, Jesus had gone out carrying the cross.
Earlier, Pilate had him flogged.
The soldiers dressed him in purple and pressed a crown of thorns onto his head. They struck him, spat on him and mocked him.
That night, an armed crowd had come for him.
Judas walked up to Jesus and kissed him.
They arrested him.
Hours before that, Jesus had been on the ground in Gethsemane.
"Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire, but what you desire."Mark 14:36
And before Gethsemane, he had eaten with his disciples.
Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it to them.
"This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me."Luke 22:19
Then he took the cup after supper.
"This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you."Luke 22:20
Christians kept doing it.
Paul says:
"For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes."1 Corinthians 11:26
He calls the cup "a sharing of the blood of Christ" and the bread "a sharing of the body of Christ."1 Corinthians 10:16
The Greek word translated "sharing" is koinonia. Elsewhere the same word is translated "fellowship." John uses it when he writes about fellowship with the Father and his Son, and fellowship with one another.
Paul continues:
"Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread."1 Corinthians 10:17
