The man
Legion
Nobody could restrain him anymore.
My name is Legion, for we are many.
Mark 4:35-41 · Mark 5:1-20
The scene
Mark tells us about this man.
He lived among the tombs.
People had tried to restrain him. They bound him with chains and fetters, but he tore the chains apart and broke the fetters in pieces.
Day and night, among the tombs and in the mountains, he cried out and cut himself with stones.
Nobody could restrain him.
Then Jesus stepped out of the boat.
The man saw him from a distance, ran to him and bowed down before him.
"What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the Most High God?"Mark 5:7
Jesus asked his name.
"My name is Legion, for we are many."Mark 5:9
The demons speak to Jesus, beg him not to send them away and ask for permission to enter a nearby herd of pigs.
Permission.
About two thousand pigs rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned.
When people came to see what had happened, they found the man who had been possessed by the legion sitting there, clothed and in his right mind.
They were afraid.
The people begged Jesus to leave their region. As he got into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to go with him.
Jesus told him to go home.
"Go to your house, to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you and how he had mercy on you."Mark 5:19
The man went into the Decapolis and told people what great things Jesus had done for him.
