The man

Go and Sin No More

A woman was brought before Jesus.

Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more.

John 7:53-8:11 · John 5:14 · NET Bible, John 7:53 textual note

They say

"Neither do I condemn you."John 8:11

Jesus showed her mercy.

The scene

Very early in the morning, Jesus was teaching in the temple when the scribes and Pharisees brought him a woman who had been caught in adultery. They put her in the middle, said that Moses commanded such a woman to be stoned and asked Jesus what he said.

The story tells us they were testing him, looking for something they could use against him.

Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground. When they continued questioning him, he looked up and said:

"He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her."John 8:7

They left one by one.

Jesus asked the woman where her accusers were and whether anyone had condemned her.

She answered, "No one, Lord."John 8:11

Jesus said:

"Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more."John 8:11

The story gives us both.

There is something important to know about this passage. John 7:53-8:11 is absent from the earliest surviving manuscripts of John's Gospel, and manuscripts that include it sometimes place it elsewhere. There is therefore serious doubt that it was originally part of John's Gospel.

Elsewhere in John, Jesus tells a man he had healed:

"Behold, you are made well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you."John 5:14

The point

From now on, sin no more.John 8:11
